Negative ions have the physical proven effect of forcing larger particles and molecules in the air together, so eliminating bad smells and smoke. They also have the effect of killing airborne organisms such as germs, bacteria and viruses. This makes these bulbs very suitable for positioning in food processing areas, medical institutions, toilets, smoking areas, and any confined spaces where airborne germs are a concern such as the workplace. There is also research (see below) that negative ions have an antidepressant effect for patients with seasonal affective disorder.

University of Leeds/St James's University Hospital "Lead researcher Dr Clive Beggs said: "This is the first epidemiological study of its kind into the use of ionisers in hospital wards and the initial results are very promising. We believe that the negative air ions are removing the bacteria from the air, so stopping the transmission of infection. Our tests have focused solely on acinetobacter, but it’s possible the ionisers may have had an effect on other airborne bacteria. We now need to carry out further research to determine exactly how the ions work and how widespread their effects could be.""

Southeast Poultry Research Laboratory, Georgia, USA. "These results indicate that high levels of negative air ions can have a significant impact on the airborne microbial load, and that most of this effect is through direct killing of the organisms. This technology, which also causes significant reduction in airborne dust, has already been successfully applied for poultry hatching cabinets and caged layer rooms. Other potential applications include any enclosed space such as food processing areas, medical institutions, the workplace, and the home, where reduction of airborne and surface pathogens is desired."
