"Humans obtain at least 90% of their dietary requirements of Vitamin D by exposure to solar UV, leading to synthesis in the skin" (Holick, 2003).
In response to customer demand we are pleased to offer our latest Androv 3000 desktop unit, fitted with UVB tubes optimised specifically for the production of Vitamin D3 (also called cholecalciferol). Vitamin D3 is naturally manufactured within the skin when 7-dehydrocholesterol reacts with UVB light.
The action spectrum (wavelengths of light) for the production of preVitamin D3 in human skin begins at approximately 260nm and ceases at around 315nm (where UVB changes to UVA). Whilst the maximum is potentially produced at 298nm this is not ideal as it coincides with the undesirable "erythema" spectrum that produces skin reddening. However most of the harmful "erythema" spectrum is at 305nm and below. Therefore a useful area of wavelengths exist between 305nm and 315nm that can be utilised to produce preVitamin D3 in the human skin - but with very little or no skin reddening.
Our bulbs have therefore been developed produce their main useful output at 311nm to take advantage of this effect, whilst minimising any undesirable wavelengths such as UVB below 305nm, UVA (315nm to 400nm) and UVC (280nm and below).
In the Northern Hemisphere between October and May the sun is low in the sky and the sun's rays are so well filtered by the atmosphere, that very little Vitamin D can be manufactured by the body.
There is a great deal of research, easily accessed via the internet, into the side-effects of low Vitamin D levels in the human body, and associations with peripheral vascular disease, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease and certain cancers.
"A PubMed database search yielded 63 observational studies of vitamin D status in relation to cancer risk, including 30 of colon, 13 of breast, 26 of prostate, and 7 of ovarian cancer, and several that assessed the association of vitamin D receptor genotype with cancer risk. The majority of studies found a protective relationship between sufficient vitamin D status and lower risk of cancer."
Furthermore as we age, the skin's ability to convert sunlight into Vitamin D also degrades (so higher amounts of exposure are needed). As Vitamin D is needed for the absorption and utilisation of calcium, and therefore healthy bones, it may be especially relevant to older people.
